Stacking guide

What goes well with Ashwagandha?

Evidence-graded stacking partners for Ashwagandha. Synergistic and neutral combinations are listed alongside pairings to avoid. Use this to design a deliberate stack rather than experimenting blind.

Safe to stack with Ashwagandha (5)

  • Chelated magnesium with high bioavailability and minimal laxative effect. The de facto sleep magnesium.

Common evening anxiolytic + sleep combination.

  • An Arctic adaptogen used for centuries in Siberian, Scandinavian, and Tibetan traditional medicine. The most-evidenced natural intervention for stress-induced mental fatigue and mild depression. Activating, not calming — take in the morning only, otherwise it disrupts sleep.

Calming + stimulating adaptogen mix. Common 'biphasic' stress protocol.

  • Sacred Ayurvedic herb (Ocimum sanctum/tenuiflorum) used for stress, mood, and metabolic health.

    Synergistic cortisol modulation.

  • Tongkat AliEVIDENCEB

Southeast Asian root (Eurycoma longifolia) used for testosterone support, stress, and energy.

Calming + testosterone support — popular for men's health stacks.

  • Phospholipid concentrated in brain cell membranes. Supports membrane fluidity and stress response.

Stack for elevated cortisol from training/work stress.

Combine with caution (2)

  • Valerian RootEVIDENCEB

Herbal sedative used for centuries for insomnia and anxiety. Acts via GABA pathway.

Both sedating — manageable but expect heavy drowsiness.

  • CaffeineEVIDENCEA

The most widely consumed psychoactive substance in human history — roughly 80% of the global population uses it daily, mostly via coffee and tea. A competitive adenosine receptor antagonist that lifts the brake on dopamine and norepinephrine signalling. The canonical pairing is 100 mg caffeine + 200 mg L-theanine for clean focus without the jitter.

Ashwagandha sedates; caffeine stimulates. Manageable but blunts both effects.
