Mechanism of action

Hybrid molecule of niacin and GABA. Crosses the blood-brain barrier (unlike standard GABA) and then cleaves into the constituent compounds in brain tissue. Niacin produces mild cerebrovascular vasodilation; GABA produces direct inhibitory neurotransmitter activity. The combination produces calming effect with cognitive support.

History

Picamilon was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1960s at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences as a treatment for cerebrovascular disorders and anxiety. It's used as a prescription drug in Russia and several former Soviet states. The FDA classified it as not a legal dietary supplement in 2015, limiting availability in the US. It remains unscheduled in most other jurisdictions.
