Hesperidin
aka Hesperidin methyl chalcone
Citrus flavonoid found in oranges and lemons. Cardiovascular protection and neuroprotection. The 2S enantiomer is bioactive.
Mechanism of action
Flavanone glycoside with antioxidant activity. Modulates endothelial function through eNOS upregulation. Anti-inflammatory through NF-κB suppression. Crosses BBB and has direct neuroprotective effects in animal models. The free aglycone (hesperetin) is the active form after gut metabolism.
History
Hesperidin was isolated from orange peel in 1828. Its cardiovascular effects have been studied extensively in European clinical research. Multiple meta-analyses support blood pressure and lipid effects. Modern interest extends to cognitive and neuroprotective applications. Unscheduled globally.
