Mechanism of action

Anthraquinones, stilbenes, and phospholipids contribute to antioxidant and lipid-lowering effects. Animal studies show neuroprotection and modest cognitive enhancement. The mechanism for hair pigmentation claim is unclear and the evidence is weak.

History

He Shou Wu has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. Significant hepatotoxicity has been documented with raw, unprocessed root and with high doses. The processed form (steamed with black bean) is much safer; the raw form should be avoided. Some commercial products mix raw and processed, producing variable safety profiles. Cases of acute liver failure have occurred.
